The Panas high school altered the spelling of "Warriors'' because they embody advocacy and stand up for what they believe in and want to help “Stomp out the stigma of mental illness." The group uses the semicolon to support the “Semi Colon” project which was created to help survivors of suicide and to support suicide awareness.
According to the organizers, the program was selected for "successfully addressing the issues of children’s mental health."
Walter Panas Guidance Counselor Melissa Smith, advisor to the Warr;ors, was joined by four members of the club in receiving the award held at the New York State Museum in Albany.
They were among five programs and two individuals selected from throughout New York State to be honored. They also received a certificate of honor from the Town of Cortlandt in recognition of their efforts in mental health awareness.
